Work with inspiring, like-minded people on transformational web and mobile software for leading brands

Codemakers is an award-winning digital consultancy providing bespoke web and mobile apps for leading brands across multiple sectors. We love technology and get a real buzz from successfully applying it to a fast-paced, commercial world.

As a forward-thinking tech company, we have established our own Software-as-a-Service products, notably Shipmate – a delivery management platform for online merchants, which has seen incredible growth in the last 12 months, for which we have exciting plans for expansion this year, together with the imminent launch of another exciting SaaS product in the public transport sector.

We are looking for a PHP Developer to help support our existing development team and lead the development on key projects. The role would suit a competent experienced PHP developer wishing to take the next step in their career and become an influential member of a talented, ambitious team.

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting our existing development team in developing and maintaining projects both internal and external for our clients
  • Acting as Development Lead on key projects, taking ownership for their successful delivery
  • Producing clean, well-documented code, applying industry recognised design patterns and testing frameworks where applicable
  • Managing your project contributions using team development tools and source code repositories
  • Influencing the continual improvement of working practices and application of technologies through maintaining track of industry developments

The role includes a wide range of opportunities to continue to refine your skills, learn new programming languages and frameworks and specialise in the fields that suit you best. Career growth opportunities include the role evolving to Team Leader, Project Manager, Development Leader or Consultant over time.

We are specifically looking for a PHP developer with experience using Laravel or similar MVC frameworks to develop and maintain mid-scale web portals and APIs. Most of our solutions are deployed to Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure and there is the opportunity to support the devops aspects of the business as part of this role.

Am I suitable for the role?

We are seeking a competent, experienced PHP programmer with a positive attitude eager to make an impact on projects, learn new skills and who has excellent communication skills. Prior commercial experience with evidence of influencing project outcomes or project leadership experience is essential. Demonstrable experience working with MVC frameworks, notably Laravel and interfacing with other systems and databases essential. Experience in database and application performance optimisation favourable.

Experience developing underlying application code for JavaScript-based frontends such as Vue.js or React favourable. Experience developing RESTful APIs and integrating other systems favourable. Prior experience working on SaaS products is desirable.

What’s the working environment like?

In-line with recent Government guidance our team have been working remotely and we have decided to make remote working an option indefinitely into the future. We would therefore consider applicants outside of a regularly commutable distance to Derby working remotely for this role, but occasional in-person meetings will be required. Applicants therefore must reside in the United Kingdom.

The daily routine includes a video conference stand-up to make sure everyone is on track, plus there are weekly opportunities to socialise in Derby City Centre, the focus being Friday evenings with the opportunity to play 5-a-side football with colleagues and friends, followed by refreshments in one of the city’s many popular bars.

What does my employment package include?

  • A starting salary of £36,000 – £44,000 depending on experience
  • Flexible working hours and remote working
  • Bupa medical insurance
  • Time to develop your skills and an annual training allowance
  • New MacBook Pro
  • 21 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Team days out and opportunities for trips abroad for conferences in the future

Sounds great! How do I apply?

Please submit your CV along with a covering letter by email to careers@codemakers.co.uk. Please quote vacancy reference CM-2108-3 with your application.

The Application Process

Your application will first be considered by our senior management team, who will invite you to a video interview if your application passes our initial criteria. Upon successful completion of your video interview, we will invite you to a second technical interview with key colleagues you will be working with, to determine where best you will fit in our team.
