  • Location: Derby, United Kingdom (Remote)
  • Salary: Starting at £24,000 plus benefits
  • Hours: Full Time
  • Contract Type: Permanent
  • Closing Date: September 30, 2021

We are looking for Graduate Software Developers to join our existing web and mobile app development team. The role would suit graduates of Computing Science or similar Software Engineering degrees.

Codemakers is an award-winning digital consultancy providing bespoke web and mobile apps for leading brands across multiple sectors. We love technology and get a real buzz from successfully applying it to a fast-paced, commercial world.

As a forward-thinking tech company, we have established our own Software-as-a-Service products, notably Shipmate – a delivery management platform for online merchants, which has seen incredible growth in the last 12 months, for which we have exciting plans for expansion over the coming months.

We are looking for two Graduate Software Developers to join our existing development team. The role would suit graduates of Computing Science or similar Software Engineering and Computer Games Programming degrees.

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting our existing development team in developing and maintaining projects both internal and external for our clients
  • Producing clean, well-documented code, applying industry recognised design patterns and testing where applicable
  • Managing your project contributions using team development tools and source code repositories

The role includes a wide range of opportunities to grow your skills, learn new programming languages and frameworks and specialise in the fields that suit you best. “On the job training” in all aspects of the role will be given throughout your first year on the Graduate programme, with training materials provided.  As you grow into your role, you will be given increasing responsibilities including customer support and project management.

Our projects are written in a number of programming languages including PHP, Flutter, Swift, Kotlin, C# on Unity, JavaScript and Ruby-on-Rails. Your role will include the opportunity to work on a mix of web applications, API development and integrations, as well as mobile and tablet apps. Most of our solutions are deployed to Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure and there is the opportunity to support the DevOps aspects of the business as part of this role.

Am I suitable for the role?

We are seeking a competent programmer with a positive attitude eager to make an impact on projects, learn new skills and who has excellent communication skills. Evidence of self-started projects, freelance work or prior industrial experience is favourable. While we don’t expect you to have worked with all of the development languages we use, if you have demonstrable experience in some of them, this will also be seen as favourable.

What’s the working environment like?

In-line with recent Government guidance our team have been working remotely and we have decided to make remote working an option indefinitely into the future. We would therefore consider applicants outside of a regularly commutable distance to Derby working remotely for this role, but occasional in-person meetings will be required. Applicants therefore must reside in the United Kingdom.

The daily routine includes a video conference stand-up to make sure everyone is on track, plus there are weekly opportunities to socialise in Derby City Centre, the focus being Friday evenings with the opportunity to play 5-a-side football with colleagues and friends, followed by refreshments in one of the city’s many popular bars.

What does my employment package include?

  • A starting salary of £24,000
  • 21 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • MacBook to work from home or in the studio
  • Team days out and opportunities for trips abroad
  • Time to develop your skills and an annual training allowance
  • Flexible working hours
  • Bupa medical insurance

Sounds great! How do I apply?

Please submit your CV along with a cover letter by email to careers@codemakers.co.uk. Please quote vacancy reference CM-2108-2 with your application.

The Application Process

Your application will first be considered by our senior management team, who will invite you to a video conference interview if your application passes our initial criteria. Further video or in-person interviews may then follow, together with a practical exercise and other assessments to determine your suitability for the role.
